When was carmel mission built

Junipero Serra in , making it the second of the 21 California missions. Though Carmel Mission was founded in Monterey, it was quickly decided that Carmel-by-the-Sea was a more appropriate location for its purpose. The fledgling establishment was moved to the Rio Road site in and the Carmel mission was dedicated in Serra was buried within its grounds. Carmel Mission is considered the most authentically restored Franciscan mission, and despite its many events and services, the Carmel Mission's courtyard and gardens are peaceful places to meditate or rest.

The Convento Museum shows visitors what Carmel Mission was like during different eras through interpretive displays, and allows them to see the cell where Junipero Serra lived and died.

From the standpoint of government, Mission Carmel was the most important, serving as the headquarters for the entire mission chain from to The fathers, though, did take time away from their administrative duties to engage in scholarly works. When the missions were secularized in , the fathers lost control of the mission and it fell into disrepair.

The land was sold and the mission was neglected for thirty years. The church stood with no roof until restoration efforts began in , bringing this grand structure back to its earlier beauty. Father Serra oversaw the planning of each mission from Carmel. He established 9 Catholic missions in California Indian regions, with a total of 21 missions eventually being established San Diego to Sonoma.

The missions established by Fr. It was relocated to its present location where better agricultural land was in abundance. The original Monterey chapel is now the San Carlos Cathedral. Restoration throughout the five acres has been extensive and brings to life the story of this bygone time.

A highlight is the wing dedicated to Father Serra which holds the cell in which he lived, worked and died.
