How old is shaolin temple

The Guangdong temple was destroyed during the civil warring following the Boxer Rebellion. Wutang Temple : Known as the tiger temple, this temple was located near the town of Wutang, built during the politically unstable time in China. The Wutang temple was mostly involved with temporal concerns, and consequently often besieged by one army or another.

It was a very old temple, integrated into the Shaolin order around AD This temple was located in an inaccessible area of the Szechuan province it was used as an institute for medical research. The method of training was based on the movements of the five animals such as: tiger, crane, leopard, snake and dragon. The union of these five animals styles clearly displayed the fighting competency of the monks. The 10 tigers of Shaolin were a group of ten of the best fighters in Southern China at the time. Much of their existence has been elaborated in Shaolin Kung Fu movies. The 10 tigers were connected to the Southern Shaolin monastery in Fujian Province which is a branch of the main Shaolin Temple.

During their contest they would defeat their opponent with fighting techniques they adapted in the Southern Shaolin temple. The abbot, Fang Chang, refused, and it is said Bodhidharma climbed high into the mountains to a cave where he meditated for nine years. It is believed that he sat, facing the cave wall for much of these nine years so that his shadow became permanently outlined on the cave wall.

Incidentally, the cave is now a sacred place and the shadow imprint has been removed from the cave and moved to the temple compound where you can view it during your visit. It is quite remarkable. Supposedly Bodhidharma exercised in the cave to keep fit, and when he entered Shaolin Temple found that the monks there were not very fit. He developed a set of exercises that later became the foundation for the specialized interpretation of martial arts at Shaolin. Martial arts were already widespread in China and many of the monks were retired soldiers.

Thus existing martial arts exercises were combined with Bodhidharma's teachings to create the Shaolin version of Kung Fu. Originally used as exercise, the Kung Fu eventually had to be used against attacking assailants after the monastery's assets. Shaolin eventually became famous for its warrior monks who were masterful in their practice of Kung Fu. Being Buddhist monks, however, they were bound by a set of principles called martial ethics, wude , that includes prohibitions such as "do not betray your teacher" and "do not fight for frivolous reasons" as well as eight "hit" and "do not hit" zones to ensure the opponent will not be too seriously injured.

During turmoil early in the Tang Dynasty , thirteen warrior monks helped the Tang emperor rescue his son, Li Shimin, from an army aiming to overthrow the Tang. In recognition of their help, Li Shimin, once emperor, named Shaolin the "Supreme Temple" in all of China and fostered learning, teaching and exchange between the imperial court and armies and the Shaolin monks.

Eighteen months later, he is here to stay. Verma came to Shaolin in to recuperate from a knee surgery when he heard about the alternative system of medicine practised at the temple.

The word Lin means forest in Chinese, thus the temple was named Shaolin for the forest at the foot of Shaoshi mountain. In this type of Buddhism, which closely follows the teachings of Shakyamuni, there are rules for monks and rules for nuns.

Batuo had two disciples named Sengchou and Huiguang, who were both martial artists before becoming monks. They were the first ones to bring martial arts to the temple. He also chose to leave the royal life to become a monk. When Bodhidharma came to the temple in , he brought the teachings of Chan Buddhism, part of the Mahayana Da Cheng school.

Bodhidharma was the 28th, and the first patriarch of Chan in China. Bodhidharma created 4 integral parts of Shaolin Kungfu, also sutras.

They were Sengcan, Daoxin, Hongren, and Huineng. However, his spiritual understanding was very high. One day while delivering firewood, he overheard a monk reciting the Diamond Sutra, and instantly became enlightened. He asked the monk what the text was and where he was from, and soon made arrangements to study with the 5th patriarch, Hongren, at Dongshan Monastary. Upon meeting, Hongren immediately knew that Huineng had very deep understanding.

One day, Hongren assembled his disciples and told them all to write him a poem.
